A CRITICAL STUDY OF THE CRITICISM ON HADITHS OF IHYA ULUM ALDIN BY ALLAMA IBN SUBKI AND HAFIZ AL-IRAQI

Abstract

Al-Ghazali’s Ihya al-ulum al-din (The Revival of the Religious Sciences) is considered one of the most important works in the field of theology, ethics and Sufism. It has gained a significant attention of
scholars and became central work in Islamic revival literature. However, the Muhaddithin criticized the hadiths cited in the book. In this context, Taj al-Din ibn Subki (d.771 h) and Hafiz al-Iraqi (d.806 h) analyzed the traditions of Ihya. Their works are valuable contribution for the assessment and critical analysis of Ihya’s hadiths. They determined the authenticity of these hadiths through application of the hadith methodology. They identified the flaws of these hadiths and categorized them into weak (daif) and fabricated (maudu). The
present research aims to analyze the criticism of these scholars on Ihya’s hadiths. It has been argued that the application of principle of riwah bil-mana (narration of the meanings of hadith) can significantly
change the status of these alleged weak and fabricated hadiths that is significantly ignored by these scholars. This paper is meticulous effort to fill these gaps.
